Current market 'a time of great opportunity' for interim managers

5 August 2013

The interim management sector is "open for business", according to an industry expert.

Ad van der Rest, co-chairman of the Institute of Interim Management (IIM), believes the worst effects of the economic downturn have passed and there is a strong level of demand for interim professionals.

Writing in the foreword to the organisation's Interim Management Survey 2013, he claimed the current market is a time of "great opportunity" for the sector.

Mr van der Rest said there are challenges to overcome, such as the changes HM Revenue and Customs has introduced to IR35 tax regulations, but concluded interim management remains a "deeply fulfilling" way of working for many individuals.

The IIM survey also revealed some interesting trends about the interim sector.

There is a relatively even split between the number of individuals who work as line or project managers and those who operate at director or executive level. Of the 2,385 interims surveyed by the organisation, 50 per cent serve as the former and 47 per cent as the latter.
