Council hires interim expert to improve children's services

16 February 2010

Leeds City Council has brought in an interim manager to oversee changes to its provision of children's services.

According to the Yorkshire Post, Eleanor Brazil was appointed as interim director of children's services at the local authority following a critical assessment of the department by independent inspectors.

The new manager, who previously worked as a deputy director responsible for children's social care at a north London council, will take control until a permanent director is recruited.

Councillor Stewart Golton, executive member responsible for children's services in Leeds, refused to comment on the details of the remuneration package that has been agreed with Ms Brazil.

However, he insisted that it is "no more than is the average for obtaining the specialist knowledge and experience required for this post".

Councillor Golton told the newspaper: "The council has obtained the services of a talented and experienced leader and manager."

Figures released by the Interim Management Association last year showed that appointments in the public sector accounted for 51 per cent of all completed interim assignments in the second quarter of 2009.
