Cornwall authorities to pursue shared procurement model

7 August 2011

Authorities in Cornwall are to pursue a new shared procurement services model as part of efforts to achieve extensive savings.

Cornwall Council has allied with several local health organisations - Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust, Cornwall Partnership NHS Trust, Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Primary Care Trust and Isles of Scilly Community Health Services - to implement a new joined-up procurement and commissioning model.

Supply Management reports that a pre-tender notice has been published by the council seeking a supply partner that will work with the bodies for a minimum of ten years, during which time it intends to establish a "competitive trading company".

It is thought that this new scheme will lead to savings of almost £2.5 million over the next seven years, as well as creating around 400 jobs in the region.

Earlier this year, industry body Socitm suggested that a joined-up model of service delivery should be adopted as a key principle of ICT efficiency improvement initiatives within the public sector.
