Companies 'must take career management issues more seriously'

UK businesses may be undermining the effectiveness of their workforce by failing to give proper attention to career management issues.

A new report from the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) has suggested that many companies are currently delegating this key issue to under-qualified line managers, who lack the skills for effective delivery.

This could be a significant problem for companies, as career management is considered vital in driving engagement among staff, as well as helping to foster capability and agility in the workforce.

Angela Baron, engagement adviser for the CIPD, said management therefore needs to create a positive working environment, in which employees are provided with appropriate support and access to career opportunities.

"Given that maintaining employability is one way to combat insecurity and drive engagement, the case for taking career management seriously should be clear to see," she added.

This comes after a survey by The Work Foundation last month revealed that employee engagement has fallen to an all time low in the UK, due to the present economic climate.
