Companies 'finding multiple reasons to extend interim placements'
Interim management appointments are becoming increasingly long-term arrangements for a variety of reasons, according to the head of Interim Management Association (IMA).
Jason Atkinson, chair of the IMA, stated that the complex conditions faced by many companies are leading to them requiring the expertise of interim staff for longer than in the past.
IMA figures released this week show that average interim assignment lengths have nearly doubled in the last five years, with companies undertaking gap management or transitional change processes finding that recruiting a permanent executive takes longer than expected.
This increases the importance of skilled interim staff, who are able to help drive business recovery and assist their employers in achieving very specific goals.
"Sometimes, it is purely down to the strength of the interim manager in place, the company values their presence and extends the assignment into new territory," Mr Atkinson added.
IMA data from both the first and second quarters of 2011 have shown that the number of interim management appointments in the UK is increasing compared to last year.
