Companies 'excluding HR experts from people management planning'

30 July 2012

British managers have been urged to give a greater role to HR staff when creating their people management strategies.

A survey carried out by online resource XpertHR shows that senior HR managers are involved in people management planning at only 66 per cent of organisations, compared to 75 per cent of non-HR managers.

This apparent neglect of the expertise offered by dedicated HR staff comes despite the fact that most companies are seeking to consider these functions as a more integral part of their business planning.

Report author Charlotte Wolff, employment relations writer and researcher at XpertHR, said it is positive that companies regard the planning of workforce issues as part of their main organisational strategy, but said it is surprising that HR staff are not being utilised properly.

She added: "Without their involvement, organisations may be missing out on invaluable expertise relating to crucial people management issues."

Last week, a report from the Institute for Employment Studies stated that the creation of a strong team spirit is essential to engaging employees.
