Communication 'makes real difference to change management'
Good communication can help to ensure change management strategies achieve their goal, according to an expert.
Mark Hubbard, director of training and consultancy firm Positive Purchasing, suggested managers who can convey messages to employees effectively will often succeed where others fail.
He recommended using a flexible and "agile" style of communication that does not rely exclusively on official meetings, emails and reports.
"While all these have their place, the day-to-day business of implementing change usually benefits from a pragmatic, personal approach," Mr Hubbard said.
He explained that visiting someone in their office or making a direct phone call, instead of suggesting a formal meeting, could help to build support for a change project throughout the business.
Mr Hubbard also suggested illustrating the potential benefits of change with stories gleaned from past experience.
In a recent blog post, the Chartered Management Institute pointed to research from Stanford University in the US that indicated competent and well-respected managers are essential for effective transformation programmes.
