CMI: Managers crucial to flexible working

25 September 2012

Business executives can play an important role in encouraging successful flexible working, according to a new report from the Chartered Management Institute (CMI).

This follows a new study from the Recruitment and Employment Confederation's Flexible Work Commission, which pointed towards new ways in which firms can improve flexibility in the workplace.

The CMI suggested that managers need to develop their skills to ensure they can get the most out of their workforce, with flexibility being a major part of this.

Research from the company reveals that the best management development can boost organisational performance by as much as 23 per cent, while also revealing that only one in five managers have had formal training.

Director of policy and research Petra Wilton said: "It's a real shame that too many managers are still unprepared to contemplate offering more flexibility."

Kerrie Fleming, a member of the Leading People faculty at Ashridge Business School, recently suggested managers need more emotional intelligence to work well with their staff.
