Charities 'need more balanced revenue stream'

20 June 2013

Not enough charities have a balanced revenue stream.

This is the opinion of Simon Teasdale, a research fellow at the University of Birmingham's Third Sector Research Centre.

Speaking at the Charity Finance Group Northern Conference, he warned charities need to "diversify" their sources of income if they are to generate better results, news website ThirdSector reports.

Mr Teasdale said he and fellow academics have carried out research into charity revenue streams and found few organisations manage to successfully raise money from both commercial and voluntary sources.

"We found that as commercial revenue goes up, income from grants and donations tends to fall", he stated.

Mr Teasdale believes charitable organisations often struggle when trying to mix more than once source of income and prefer to "put all their eggs in one basket".

He warned "very few" charities currently have balanced revenue streams and as organisations become increasingly dependant on government funding, they run the risk of losing the public's trust.
