Change management 'requires strong leadership'

18 October 2011

Companies have been reminded of the importance of strong and charismatic leadership when attempting to execute a successful change management programme.

Sara Ridley, a consultant at business and IT consultancy Waterstons and leader of the Change Management Institute's north-east branch, said good management can be vital to convincing workers of the need for change, allowing them to help drive the process.

She told nebusiness that the late Steve Jobs is the ideal example of this principle at work, with his dynamic leadership helping to radically change the direction of Apple and position it for industry-leading success.

Ms Ridley said Mr Jobs recognised that employees "hold the key" to successful change and was able to create an appropriate business environment to encourage innovation.

"When individuals really understand what is changing and identify their role within that change, they will act alongside it rather than against it," she explained.

Last month, Amy Wilson of charity group Global Action Plan noted that successful change management is particularly important for businesses that seek to improve their environmental performance.
