Change management 'requires strong communication'

25 March 2012

Businesses that are seeking to find the best way of executing a change management process have been advised of the need to implement a proper communications strategy.

Claire Schooley, a senior analyst on the IT leadership team at research group Forrester, told CIO magazine that the current economic climate is increasing pressure on companies to get their change management policies right first time.

She said: "While there's no single correct solution, we believe a strong communications plan that starts before the change initiative begins, lasts beyond its conclusion, and goes up and down the organisation comes close."

Executives need to be fully engaged with the change process, allowing a clear plan of action to be drawn up and communicated to staff in an open and collaborative manner.

Thereafter, flexibility will become an essential quality, as firms will need to amend their plans based on necessity, while also constantly monitoring how well workers are adapting to the change.

Earlier this year, Forrester Research analysis highlighted improved change management strategies as a key priority for businesses during 2012.
