CBI: Flexible working now a key part of labour market

The Confederation of British Industry (CBI) has urged unions to bring their policies into line with the realities of the labour market, suggesting that flexible working presents them with a new system they need to take into account.

Speaking at the Eversheds' Labour Relations Conference, CBI deputy director-general Dr Neil Bentley claimed that the market has changed irrevocably in the last 30 years.

Flexible working has brought a number of benefits to employers and staff, with technology making jobs more dynamic than they have ever been in the past.

"For businesses, this means really getting our heads around how to engage with employees as individuals and what they want from work. As a management challenge, this is significant," added Dr Bentley.

He concluded that unions should assess how flexible working has changed their policies.

The Recruitment and Employment Confederation recently expressed alarm that the government could reduce flexible working patterns in the public sector.
