BYOD 'needs to be considered by executives'

17 December 2012

It is important that IT executives come to terms with the problems posed by bring-your-own-device (BYOD) policies, which are becoming increasingly popular with British businesses.

According to security appliance provider Fortinet in its Enabling Secure BYOD report, it is crucial bosses consider the two concepts of usability and security when planning a policy.

With personal devices such as tablets increasingly prevalent and powerful, many end users believe they can help them achieve their work aims more easily.

However, "BYOD opens up numerous challenges around network, data, and device security along with blurring the lines of privacy and accessibility," the organisation explained.

It is important to constantly reassess policies to make sure they are sufficient to the company's needs, it concluded.

John Suffolk, global cyber security officer at Huawei, recently suggested that the government and UK businesses need to work together closely to plan data security techniques across the corporate world.
