Businesses urged to think about personnel

20 November 2012

It is important business executives think carefully about up-skilling their staff and attracting the right kind of people to their operation, an expert has declared.

Charlie Mayfield, chairman of the UK Commission for Employment and Skills, was speaking after the government launched a new £150 million pot to create the training schemes firms need to grow their companies.

The fund is the second round of the Employer Ownership Pilot, which is already working with a number of companies to improve the role their staff are able to play in helping them grow.

"Business leaders must think strategically about their personnel - equipping workforces with the skills they know are missing," Mr Mayfield explained.

He added that British businesses will only be able to compete with their counterparts if they can produce a labour force which is among the best in the world.

The Confederation of British Industry recently suggested that a flexible labour market is crucial to the economy's recovery.
