Business process outsourcing 'requires change management'

Companies that are aiming to maximise their chances of a successful business process outsourcing (BPO) arrangement have been reminded of the need to implement change management measures.

Business advisory group Spend Matters has published a new report in association with analyst Horses for Sources which notes that BPO is potentially a "minefield of challenges" if the proper planning is not done.

Central to this is a thorough change management policy, with the document noting that "nearly all" BPO adopters express a regret over not committing more time to this practice.

Other key recommendations include ensuring that all aspects of the BPO process are considered both in isolation and as a whole, while firms should also gain as much first-hand guidance from providers as possible.

"Each stage brings critical nuance and importance in getting the most from relationships and avoiding potentially costly missteps," the report stated.

Earlier this month, TPI published market analysis showing that the number of European firms engaging in BPO rose during the first quarter of 2011.
