British workers 'feeling pressured to work overtime'

12 August 2012

Staff across the UK are putting in significant amounts of unpaid overtime at present.

A study carried out by Travelodge has revealed that up to £157 billion of unpaid overtime takes place across the UK each year, with one-third of Britons spending an extra 16 hours in the workplace each week.

As a result, managers should be looking for ways to decrease the stress associated with tasks for their staff, while also ensuring individuals are sufficiently resourced to carry out their duties during their regular hours.

Psychologist Corrinne Sweet commented: "Cramming an extra week's worth of work into an average week shows danger signs of us becoming a nation of workaholics, heading for serious psychological and physical burnout."

Recent research carried out by the Chartered Management Institute and Simply Health has shown many businesses continue to suffer from negative management styles, which could be having a serious impact on worker morale and productivity.
