BPO outsourcing 'not driven by cost'

5 November 2012

The majority of business process outsourcing (BPO) is no longer being driven by cost as factors such as efficiency and expertise become increasingly important, according to a new survey.

Matthias Mierisch, Arvato chief executive officer, cited an independent research study with 100 senior BPO clients that revealed only ten per cent of organisations consider cost-cutting as the primary role played by outsourcing.

He explained to Computer Weekly that 72 per cent of respondents indicated that access to specialist skills and expertise was crucial to their outsourcing decision, while improving growth and expansion potential was also considered an important factor.

"While cost savings remain a given, companies are looking for ways in which they can become agile enough to capitalise on changes in market trends," Mr Mierisch argued.

Martyn Hart, chairman of the National Outsourcing Association, recently suggested that outsourcing can be a safe way for businesses to expand without taking too many risks.
