157 Group re-brands as Collab Group

28 October 2016

Collab Group sets out new vision to reverse skills gap

Odgers Interim has partnered with Collab Group to implement a collaborative and innovative approach to deliver high quality further education across the UK.

On Wednesday 19th October, the 32 member colleges of the 157 Group and a collection of guests gathered at the Chartered Accountants Hall in London for the announcement of the organisation’s new name and values.

Re-branded as the ‘Collab Group’, CEO Ian Pretty laid out his vision for the group’s future building upon the 157 Group’s successful legacy.

The group’s new name reflects a focus on a collaborative approach to driving change within the further education sector – leading the organisation’s efforts to ‘stay relevant’ within a rapidly changing sector.

As part of an effort to become more open the group has identified three key future aims. Primarily they’ll be working to combat the deepening skills gap hindering economic growth, to give learners the best chance of success and finally to ensure that further education becomes a ‘commercial and self-sustaining vehicle for social change and economic improvement’.

Dividends of this commitment to economic improvement are already being felt, with the economic impact of Collab Group’s members to the local business community in Great Britain totalling £26 billion annually – leading Ian to deem the group’s impact “indisputable.”

A collaborative approach with the government will also be a central consideration, as the group works with decision makers to deliver Institutes of Technology while continuing to influence policy to provide solutions to problems plaguing the sector.

As part of the refreshed strategy, Collab Group will be focusing on a number of sectors particularly at risk of widening skills gaps; Construction, Engineering and Advanced Manufacturing, Digital and Technology, Creative Industries, Professional and Financial Services and Health and Hospitality.

Ian Pretty concluded his speech by outlining the new mission of Collab Group: ‘Together Today for the Skills of Tomorrow’.

Narinder Uppal, Consultant in the Odgers Interim Education Practice, comments: “Collab Group are making a real mark upon the quality of further education. At a time of change and increasing pressure upon the education sector, further education institutions should be leading the way when it comes to tackling the skills gap. The success they have enjoyed already has been considerable and this re-branding is the start of the next chapter in its journey to transform the skills learners acquire in the UK.

“At Odgers Interim, we’re looking forward to working closely together to initiate real change and ensure management in education delivers the best results. We’ll be doing our best to support Collab Group and equip students with skills that last a lifetime by ensuring the right skills at senior management level.”
